MISSION STATEMENT

“A community-managed place of learning, administered in the spirit of the Treaty partnership,
providing quality training for the workplace.”

Horowhenua Learning Centre's prime purpose is to provide a secure learning environment in which people can acquire the skills and knowledge they need and want to improve their opportunities in the work environment.

HLC began in 1984 as a training centre for youth, but has now broadened its focus, so that today we provide a very diverse range of vocational courses, and other one-on-one services to unemployed people of all ages.

In addition to its general employment skills course for youth, HLC offer’s

  • TOPs (government-funded) and fee-paying courses in computing, business administration, hospitality and caregiving

  • short pre-apprenticeship trade training (interior decorating, panelbeating and auto-refinishing), as a stepping stone to an apprenticeship

  • services to people identifying with a disability, both a National Certificate course, and employment with appropriate support

  • on-the-job training to trainees who just want to get into work (and earn some money!) rather than attending a campus-based course. To this end, we are a type of employment agency!

  • STAR courses to local secondary schools

  • night school classes to individuals and businesses in computing, computer applications and literacy

  • assessments, job coaching, job placement and post-placement support to a range of targeted people including the long-term unemployed, and Sickness and Invalid beneficiaries

Students like HLC because of our …

  • happy, friendly and welcoming atmosphere

  • respectful and safe environment

  • high quality teaching

  • helpful and caring staff

  • passion for assisting students to achieve
